Shelf life

Naquele dia, era pouco
o ar que se respirava
nas veias. Um limite de vozes,
sobejo freático de cores e de cifras,
recortava microscópicas raízes
de cordel. Um limite, o cheiro
dos anos. Por vezes,
eram as velas, estanques e verticais,
que articulavam gestos e sinapses.
Eram estas as letras, o ritmo seco
rasgando e quebrando a frescura
do papel. Sem a mágoa do orvalho,
renovava as simetrias do tempo
nas prateleiras e nas paredes
que gemiam a água da tua pele,
as cinzas que se libertavam do meu lápis.

A craving for extraordinary incident

The most effective of these causes are the great national events which are daily taking place, and the increasing accummulation of men in cities, where the uniformity of their occupations produces a craving for extraordinary incident, which the rapid communication of intelligence hourly gratifies.

William Wordsworth, Preface to Lyrical Ballads (1800)
